from 15-yards out. The shot hit the cross bar and caromed
straight down. UCR goalkeeper Tawny Poggio quickly pounced
on the rebound and preserved the shutout. On the night, Poggio

The third-year UC Riverside women’s soccer program reached
a major milestone, with back-to-back 10-win seasons after
shutting out Idaho, 2-0, in Moscow, Idaho, Friday afternoon.
With an earlier win over Fullerton by Utah State, the Highlanders
and Aggies join Cal Poly as the only Big West teams over the
10-win mark.
Conversely, the losing
streak has hit five games for Idaho, losing it’s fifth
straight match. In the last 10 games, the Vandals are 0-8-2.
The Vandals (2-10-4, 0-6-0)
held the visiting Highlanders (10-5-1, 4-2-0) close for much
of the game, locking into a defensive battle that went into
the half tied 0-0.
It wasn’t until the
73:35 mark that Riverside was able to break the scoreless
tie when Angela Reling had a ricochet off the post land right
at her feet that she was able to tap in for a 1-0 lead.
Just over six minutes later
at the 80:03 mark, Riverside scored again when Amber Plumlee
connected with Jessica Armel on a through pass that Armel
was able to put into the back of the net.
Freshman goalkeeper Tawny
Poggio earned her sixth shutout of the season and notched
three saves.
The Highlanders will head
to Logan, Utah, to face the Aggies in what could determine
second place in the conference. The teams will meet at 12:00
p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 26. The Highlanders return home to close
out the regular season with games against UC Irvine on Friday,
Oct. 31 and Long Beach State on Sunday, Nov. 2.
(LOGAN, Utah) – The
UC Riverside women’s soccer team battled to a 0-0 tie
with Utah State in a key Big West Conference matchup Sunday
afternoon in Logan, Utah. Heading into the match Utah State
was second and UC Riverside was third in the BWC standings.
After playing to a 2-0
win against the University of Idaho in Moscow on Friday, the
Highlanders had to bus back to Spokane, Wash., catch a flight
to Salt Lake City and then travel by bus again to Logan and
then play an early 12:00 p.m. game on Sunday.
Tired as they were, the
Highlanders (10-5-3, 4-2-1 Big West) were able to play a close
match with the Aggies (10-5-2, 4-1-2 Big West).
Both teams came out firing
in the first half with Utah State having a slight 8-7 lead
in first half shots with UCR getting one shot on goal and
Utah State managing two.
USU's best scoring chances
came off shots from Amber Tracy and Charlsie Harris. Each
had shots that went just wide of the goal. Riverside's best
scoring opportunity came in the first half when Vanessa Chanez
headed a cross that bounced off the crossbar.
Each goalkeeper recorded
five saves. UCR Tawny Poggio recorded her second shutout of
the weekend and seventh solo-shutout of the season. The Aggies’
Megan Mills also recorded her second shutout of the weekend
and 10th of the season.
With a point apiece with
the tie, Utah State ties Cal Poly with 14 points and UCR remains
in third with 13 points. Cal Poly was scheduled to play at
12:00 p.m. at fifth place Pacific, but was rescheduled to
6:30 p.m. due to lack of officials at game time.
Fourth place Long Beach
State and sixth place UC Irvine postponed their matches due
to safety concerns with high levels of smoke in the air due
to three major fires burning in the Los Angeles area. That
match is rescheduled for Tuesday night.
(RIVERSIDE, Calif.) –
The UC Riverside women’s soccer team played visiting
UC Irvine tough through regulation, but lost
in the first overtime period, 1-0, on a goal that just
found its way into the net Friday afternoon at the UCR Soccer
Stadium.
The Anteaters (10-3-5,
4-1-3 Big West) got their goal from Lindsay Duke five minutes
into the overtime period that was set up off a free kick.
The ball was fed to Duke from Britney Webster who managed
to get a bit of control on the ball around the UCR goal box
and then got it to Duke who headed it just past the reach
of netminder Tawny Poggio.
Both teams had a few prime
opportunities to break the scoreless tie and most likely the
momentum of the match.
The Highlanders (10-6-3, 4-3-1 Big West) missed the opportunity
to take the lead in the 69th minute on a header by Kelly Ferguson
that sailed just wide of the net.
UCI had a shot that nailed
the crossbar on the 79th minute on a shot from Hayley McNallan.
After a corner kick and a save by Poggio, McNallan’s
sent what looked like a sure-goal shot at the net, only to
find metal.
Riverside may have had
its best shot at a goal with just over six minutes remaining
in the second half. Allison Stone drove the ball down the
right side of the penalty box and sent a sweet slide pass
to a charging Linda Allen who looked as if she had the keeper
beat, but her shot went just wide across the mouth of the
goal.
With time running out in
regulation, UC Irvine attacked the Highlanders’ net,
but had two quick shots blocked.
UC Riverside had a slight 15-12 advantage in shots and both
teams had five shots on goal in the match.
The Anteaters were able to get five corner kicks compared
to the Highlanders one.
With Big West Tournament
implications with the match, the winner of this game would
most likely be one of the four top teams in the conference
and earn a berth in the tournament with hopes of advancing
to the NCAA Championship Tournament.
The win gives UC Irvine
sole possession of third place in the conference and drops
UC Riverside to fourth place. The top two teams, Cal Poly
and Utah State square off Friday at 5:00 p.m. and fifth place
Long Beach State faces Cal State Fullerton at 7:00 p.m.
The Highlanders close out
the 2003 season schedule in a must-win game at home on Sunday
against Long Beach to still have a chance to make the tournament.
Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.

the year on a goal just under three minutes into the match.

field, eluding the defender and chipping the ball to Vanessa
Chanez who headed the ball past the diving keeper.
The 49ers (9-9-0, 5-4-0

59th minute, as Amber Oliveira blasted a shot that drilled
the crossbar to save a sure goal.
UCR had a slight 14-12
lead in the shot department and had seven shots on goal compared
to Long Beach State’s four.

of excellence, posting back-to-back 10-win seasons and setting
a new mark of 11 wins in 2003.
The team also set a new
mark with 10 shutouts in the season, eclipsing last year’s
total of nine. Freshman goalkeeper Tawny Poggio posted eight
solo shutouts and one combined shutout.
With UC Santa Barbara topping
Utah State, 4-1, and Cal State Fullerton topping UC Irvine,
3-1, the Highlanders finish third place in the conference
and will face UC Santa Barbara at 7:30 p.m. on Friday in Fullerton.
(IRVINE, Calif.) –The
UC Riverside women's soccer team fought to the last minute,
but ended its incredible season with a 3-2
loss to UC Santa Barbara in the Big West Conference Tournament
Friday Night at Anteater Stadium.
With just five minutes left
in the match and trailing, 3-1, UCR's Jessica Armel found
UCSB's goalkeeper out of position, taking a pass from Amber
Plumlee and notching an uncontested goal.
In the 88th minute, Plumlee
found herself one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but her shot
to the left was just snagged by Jamie Considine to keep the
score at 3-2.
The Highlanders continued
to fight to the last seconds of the match, but were unable
to find the game-tying goal to force overtime.
The Gauchos (11-5-4, 5-2-2
Big West) scored two first-half goals on two corner kick plays
to take a 2-0 lead into the break.
Down, 2-0, in the second
half, the Highlanders (11-7-3, 5-3-1 Big West) cut the lead
in half on a breakaway goal from sophomore Vanessa Chanez
in the 69th minute.
Just under a minute later,
UCSB scored to make it a two-goal game. Jennifer Borcich took
a cross from Randi Johns finding the back of the net for her
second goal of the night at the 69:35 mark.
UCR led, 17-31, in the shot
department, but had four of the team's six shots on goals
saved by Considine. Freshman Tawny Poggio made four saves
on seven shots on goal for the Highlanders.
For the second straight
season in just their third year of existence, the Highlanders
have posted 10-win seasons.
With the win and Cal Poly's
earlier 2-0 victory over UC Irvine, the Gauchos will face
the Mustangs in the championship match on Sunday with the
winner representing the Big West in the NCAA tournament.
